Special Needs Parents
Caring for a child with special needs is hard work. You deserve support too. I help parents and caregivers feel less isolated and more confident — in themselves, and in their child’s future.
You Might Recognize These Questions:
“Am I doing enough?” “What if this doesn’t work?” “Why did this happen to us?”
When your child has special needs, life brings more questions than answers — whether your child is young or an adult you’re still supporting. And you’re rarely holding just this one thing — you might also be raising other children, tending to a marriage, or caring for aging parents. Sometimes it’s not a parent at all, but an adult sibling who’s stepped into caregiving, often without ever expecting to. However you got here, you’re navigating emotions others simply can’t understand.
- Isolation — no one else quite gets it
- Exhaustion — the meetings, IEPs, ISPs, and appointments never stop
- Disconnection — from your partner, friends, and other loved ones
- Doubt — questioning whether you're making the right choices
- Judgment — feeling scrutinized when your child has behavioral challenges
- Worry — about who will care for your child when you no longer can
- Overload — showing up for your other children, your partner, or your aging parents, while your child with special needs requires so much of you
My Approach
You are not alone. I remind clients of that, again and again.
This isn’t parenting coaching, and I won’t tell you how to raise your child. My focus is on you — the person doing the holding. We work on how you sustain yourself, so you can keep showing up for your child with special needs, your other children, and everyone else who needs you.
That means looking at how you care for aging parents on top of everything else, how you keep relationships outside your family healthy, and how you know when to say no. Together, we create a space where you’re truly understood — where you don’t have to explain the IEP or ISP meetings, the hard days, or the fears about the future you don’t say out loud.
My approach is trauma-informed and draws on CBT, narrative therapy, and mindfulness-based stress reduction to build self-compassion and practical coping skills that create real balance.
I help you advocate — for yourself, as much as for your child.
FAQs
Do you provide ABA therapy for my child?
No. I don’t provide ABA or any direct therapy for your child. My focus is entirely on you, the parent or caregiver. If you’re looking for ABA or other services for your child, I’ll help point you in the right direction, but my work here is about supporting you.
I don't know how to balance caring for my other children and my child who has special needs. Can therapy help?
Yes — though I want to be clear about what that looks like. This isn’t parenting coaching. My focus is on you: how you sustain yourself so you can keep showing up for everyone who needs you, including yourself.
My child's needs are so unique. Can therapy really help?
Yes, because this work isn’t about your child’s needs — it’s about yours. However unique your family’s situation is, the toll it takes on you is real, and that’s what we focus on together.
How am I going to do this forever?
That question is heavy, and it makes sense that it’s on your mind. We won’t solve “forever” in one session. We’ll build a way for you to sustain yourself for the long haul — not just survive it.
What kinds of special needs do you have experience with?
My focus isn’t on any specific diagnosis — it’s on you, the caregiver. Whatever your child’s needs, I help you navigate the caregiving load: balancing your other children, caring for aging parents, keeping relationships healthy outside your family, and knowing when to say no.
Is it normal to feel isolated, even when people around me are trying to help?
Yes. Other people can care about you and still not fully get what you’re going through. That gap is real, and it’s not your fault. This is a space where you don’t have to explain everything from scratch.
I feel guilty for getting frustrated. Does that make me a bad parent?
No. Frustration doesn’t cancel out love. This work isn’t about judging your parenting. It’s about giving you a place to feel what you feel, without guilt piling on top of it.
I'm also raising other kids, working, or caring for aging parents. Is this still the right place for me?
Yes. Most of the parents and caregivers I work with are juggling more than just their child’s needs. This work is built around that reality — we’ll look at your whole load, not just one piece of it.
