Saranah (Sanskrit) — refuge; shelter; protection.
Support for the ones who hold everyone else.
Here's what It looks like:
- I won't judge you, wherever you are right now
- I'll help you find words for what you're carrying, even when it's hard to explain
- I'll teach you real skills to cope with a hard situation that isn't going away
- I'll help you find places where you can set boundaries, even if it feels impossible right now
- I'll work with your real life — not a one-size-fits-all idea of "caregiver burnout"
- I'll make room for grief, tiredness, guilt, and love — because you can feel all of these at once
Welcome to your safe place.
Maybe you can’t remember the last time you felt clear about anything. You’ve been holding your breath for so long you’ve forgotten what it feels like to exhale. Frozen. Powerless. Like no one really understands what you’re going through — or maybe like no one’s even noticed. Relief feels far away. Even the smallest decisions feel heavy. This is where you get to put it down.
I’m Diane Dawson, and I created Saranah Counseling for the people who are always taking care of someone else — a parent, a partner, a client, a patient, a sibling. You’re used to being the strong one. The one who remembers the appointments, makes the hard calls, and holds things together even when no one’s holding you. This is a safe place to put it down — even if just for an hour. A place to be truly heard, and remember that you matter too — not just for what you do for others, but for who you are.
My Approach
My job is not to fix your situation. A lot of the time, I can’t — the diagnosis won’t go away, the caregiving won’t end, the illness won’t get better. What I can do is help you feel relief, feel connected to others, and even feel joy — while still living your real life.
That means I’ll teach you ways to cope, even when the hard parts don’t go away. It also means something very practical: I’ll help you figure out where you can set limits, put yourself first and say even say”no”!
My approach is trauma-informed and holistic, drawing on cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and mindfulness-based stress reduction — not as separate techniques, but as different ways of meeting you where you are.

The Why Behind Saranah Counseling
This work is close to my heart.
I helped care for my grandmother when she had Alzheimer’s. I watched her change, and I felt grief long before she passed away. I also raised a child with special needs. I know what it’s like to constantly advocate, feel sad in quiet moments, and love your child with your whole heart, sometimes all at once.
I’ve also worked for many years in hospice care and with people who have disabilities. I’ve sat with people during some of the hardest moments of their lives. I’ve also supported the caregivers and workers who care for them.
Watching someone you love change in ways you weren’t prepared for is disorienting. Being the one everyone else calls when something goes wrong can leave little room to feel your own feelings. Grieving a life you didn’t expect or trying to hold onto hope while your circumstances stay the same, takes something out of you that’s hard to name. Whatever brings you here, you don’t just need someone to listen. You need someone who understands the whole picture.
That’s where I come in.
I’ve spent my career alongside families facing aging, illness, and disability — whether that’s an older parent needing more care, a diagnosis that changed everything overnight, or a family navigating special needs. Across all of it, I’ve seen the same thing: the person doing the holding rarely has anyone holding them.
